Control Union launches EUDR-aligned certification standard for timber
Control Union has launched a Timber Legality Verification (TLV) standard to help timber businesses track their compliance with deforestation regulations and align with the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
The EUDR aims to prevent deforestation and forest degradation, reduce global carbon emissions and address the negative impacts of agricultural expansion. Medium-to-large sized businesses have until 30 December 2024 to comply with the requirements of the regulation, while smaller businesses have until 30 June 2025.
To demonstrate compliance, businesses must provide comprehensive data and documentation covering various aspects of their entire supply chain, including a due diligence statement and geolocation data. They must also conduct a risk analysis and demonstrate compliance with local laws, including protecting human rights and maintaining ethical working practices across the supply chain. Failure to comply can result in significant penalties and jeopardise market access within the EU.
Control Union’s new TLV, introduced in July 2024, is specifically designed to reflect the requirements of the EUDR. By verifying their performance against TLV standards, businesses can demonstrate to customers and relevant authorities their commitment to due diligence, legality assurance and the prevention of deforestation and forest degradation.
“By going through the TLV process, businesses in the timber and forestry industry can see how they are performing in terms of deforestation and legality of their operations. It is based on exactly the same standards and requirements as the EUDR, so achieving TLV is a strong sign that businesses are on the right track towards EUDR compliance,” said James Schadenberg, Programme Manager Timber Legality at Control Union.
As well as providing TLV certification, Control Union can also offer additional guidance and support tools to help businesses implement the findings and address any weaknesses highlighted during certification process.
