GOLS - Global Organic Latex Standard
The green concept has been applied in various ways when considering the production process of products based on natural rubber. Organic gloves, organic mattresses and natural latex related products with ‘organic label’ are the latest trends around the globe. They are introduced to the market under different labels and trade names. Is there any standard that allows the final consumer to accept this label without any doubt? Is there any acceptable standard procedure to introduce these ‘organic’ products to the market? These are the frequently asked questions among many consumers today.
New standards in latex
As far as end consumers and the manufacturers were concerned, it really was a drawback that proper standards were not available. Exactly why an intervention of an accredited third party certification body was required. Venturing into a new era of sustainability for natural rubber products, Control Union introduced a new standard. After considering all these unmet needs within the latex industry. The continuous demand of the manufacturing sector and the associations of latex producers contributed in accelerating and strengthening this process. Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), which was introduced in the year 2012, started its journey with natural rubber latex products in different parts of the globe.
How you benefit
GOLS has been introduced to ensure a clear path and procedure on the route from field level/farmer level to certified organic latex product manufacturer. Among other factors, manufacturers that are given the go-ahead to produce organic products under the GOLS logo would have to follow mandatory social and environmental regulations. This will make the final consumer socially and environmentally responsible; indirectly.
Another top focus of this standard is the consistency of the quality. In fact, one of the main objectives is to prevent the introduction of ‘falsely certified’ products in to the market. This prevention will protect the end consumer from being exposed to bogus products, while safeguarding the certified organic latex related manufacturers who follow the given procedures in their manufacturing processes.
What the standard looks like
Minimum requirements need to be met in order to achieve GOLS certification for Latex collection points, Centrifuging, manufacturing and processing units, retailers and brand owners. This standard covers the requirements of processing, traceability, separation, identification, record keeping, quality control, environmental management, social compliance, labelling and distribution of processed and semi-processed final products, made from certified natural rubber latex of an organic origin. Some of the criteria state compliance requirements for the entire facility where GOLS products are processed (6.0 Environmental Management, 7.0 Social compliance, 8.0 Registration and Audit requirement), whereas other criteria relate to the specific products that are subject to certification.
How to get certified
A yearly (onsite) audit will take place of all the Latex collection points, Centrifuging, manufacturing and processing units, retailers and brand owners you work with. This in accordance to the standard (GOLS), in order to maintain GOLS Certification. The Certification Body reserves the right to carry out additional announced or unannounced audits, on- or off-site.
Certification is valid for one year. Get in touch with us by clicking the contact button on this page. Once we have received your completed application, we can send an offer letter with details as to our service and the cost for the certification.
